Caledonia Gladiators fell to Basket Lattes Montpellier Association, BLMA, at Home after a long road trip. A tough match-up against the strong French side left the Gladiators shaken in the first quarter. However, with the crowd behind them all the way, Gladiators continued to fight every possession. This EuroCup Game ended with BLMA winning 51-97.
The first quarter stunned Gladiators and their home fans with BLMA taking a commanding 4 – 30. The Caledonia Gladiators struggled from the field against the tough defence of BLMA, making only one basket from opening play, and converting twice from the free throw line. In contrast, BLMA had an amazing offensive first quarter, missing just three of their shots to have a 30-point quarter. BLMA executed the fast break to perfection during this quarter to end the quarter 4 – 30.
However, Gladiators didn’t give up, over doubling their offensive output, with an 11-point quarter. It was not enough to close the deficit against powerhouse BLMA who scored 50 points by the end of the half. Caledonia Gladiators picked up their defence during the 2nd Quarter, increasing their pressure on BLMA and decreasing their scoring by 10-points in that 10-minute quarter. However, BLMA entered the half with a commanding 35-point lead.
BLMA continued their assault on Caledonia Gladiators in the third quarter. Another strong quarter quarter for BLMA with 23-points as a team but Gladiators kept their heads held high and fought hard as a team with a 15-point quarter of their own, with multiple Gladiators contributing. The quarter ended 15-23, putting BLMA up 30 – 73 entering the final 10 minutes of the game.
Despite the result, Gladiators fought together, with the final quarter ending 21 – 24. The Caledonia Gladiators should heart in the final quarter, playing tough and for each other to put a positive end to a tough defeat against an undefeated team in EuroCup competition, BLMA. A closer second half between the two teams saw the second half end 36 – 47. However, the final score of the EuroCup game was 51 – 97 to BLMA.
