In the first match up of the Super League Basketball, Caledonia Gladiators fell to the Newcastle Eagles 71 – 94. After a back and forth start in the first couple minutes, Newcastle started to pull away in the with a strong 28 – 19 lead at the end of the quarter.

A tough shooting start and a tough match up in Newcastle made for a challenging game. Going into the second quarter down 9 was a mental challenge for the Gladiators but they continued to fight on throughout the half but were unable to overcome the might of the Eagles with the half ending 31 – 49, down 18.

Despite the 18-point deficit, Gladiators remained head strong, having a tight start to the third quarter. The first 4 minutes of the quarter was tied 7 – 7, highlighting the Gladiator spirit within our players. Gladiators and Eagles tied during the third quarter, with Eagles lead remaining at 18 at the end of the third, 50 – 68.

Going into the final quarter, Gladiators knew they had a hill to climb if they wanted to come out on top. Gladiators continued to fight with the Eagles, with the fourth quarter being a back and forth quarter but despite the second half of the game being close, it was not enough to make up for the 18-point deficit from the first half. Gladiators ultimately lost the game 71 – 94 to a strong Newcastle Eagles team.

Gladiators will have a chance at redemption against the Newcastle Eagles as they were drawn to face them in the Super League Basketball Cup first round this December. More information to come, so stay tuned to our website and social platforms.
