The Caledonia Gladiators secure their first Super League Basketball Championship win against Top of the Standings, London Lions. Leading from the start of the game, the Caledonia Gladiators shocked the London Lions in a St Andrew’s Day match-up that saw the North beat the South.
The first quarter was a strong display by the Gladiators as they came out swinging, taking an 18 – 10 lead against the Lions. Not letting the Lions take control of the game, the Gladiators stormed to a 8 – 1 lead within the first 3 minutes of action at Playsport and didn’t let up for the full 40 minutes of the game, with every player contributing and scoring.
The second quarter was a closer contest as London attempted to bring themselves back into the game and stop the Gladiators running away before the half. The score of the second quarter was 18 – 18, with the score entering the half sitting at 36 – 28. With the crowd at Playsport behind them, the Gladiators looked strong.
Half Time Score – 36 – 28
The Gladiators took care of business coming out of the half-time break with another dominating 10 minutes taking the quarter 22 – 12 and extending their lead to 18 with the score at the end being 58 -40. With everything going their way, tonight’s MVP, Trevond Barnes, put an exclamation mark on the quarter with a huge putback dunk with a minute and a half left of the third quarter!
However, the London Lions were not willing to give up the fight, coming into the fourth determined to get themselves back into the game. Lions fought back to decrease the deficit down to 8 but it wasn’t enough to stop the Gladiators in the Amphitheatre and as every Ancient Classic goes, the Gladiators were triumphant against the lions. Every Gladiators showed out in their first Super League Basketball Championship victory.
Tonight’s MVP was Trevond Barnes.
