Another road game for the women Gladiators saw them take a loss to Wolves in Oaklands in the first round of the Super Basketball League Championship. After a strong first half, the Gladiators were unable to stop the strong Wolves comeback in Oaklands.
The first quarter saw the Gladiators take a commanding 22 – 15 lead in enemy territory. After trading baskets between the two teams, Gladiators emerged up 7 taking control during the final minutes of the quarter. This was aided by the Gladiators ability to share the ball, having 6 assists in the first quarter compared to Wolves 0.
Wolves came back in the second quarter, with both teams even at the end at 47 – 47. Both teams struggled from three-point range in the first half, shooting around 20% each, but the inside game was strong with Gladiators achieving 76% from two point range. However, due to wolves converting points at the free throw line, all was tied going into the second half.
Wolves came into the second half fighting taking a 7-point lead by the end of the third quarter. A tough shooting start to the quarter limited the Gladiators, and Wolves continued to covert from the free throw line, with strong 3-point shooting helping to contribute to their 7-point lead entering the final quarter.
In the fourth Gladiators cut the lead down to 4 during the first 4 minutes of play to make in 74 – 70 with the help of strong defensive rebounding and a 3 to start the quarter by Delaynie Byrne. Gladiators fought to stay in the game during the first half of the quarter but were unable to slow Oaklands Wolves down in the fourth quarter as they continued as they left off in the third, finishing the game up 12 for a 85 – 73 win to Oakland.
