A new documentary following the Gladiators’ 2022/23 men’s season is set to premiere on the BBC this Monday, the 18th of September!
Throughout the entirety of the historic campaign, in which the Gladiators picked up the franchise’s first silverware in 20 years, cameras followed a dedicated group of players, staff and fans, providing an insight into the running of the club both on and off-court.
Starting during the summer of 2022, when the club were named the Glasgow Rocks, the story builds around the introduction of new owners, Steve and Alison Timoney, as the franchise rebranded to the Caledonia Gladiators. Then, a season full of up-and-downs followed for Scotland’s only men’s professional basketball team, with the extreme high of winning the British Basketball League Trophy Final thanks to a talented group of import signings from across the globe, and homegrown British talent.
The story explores the never-before-seen look at professional basketball in the UK, including players moving to Scotland, away from families, challenges on and off the court, and some of the franchise’s top names balancing other work and university commitments.
A total of eight 30-minute episodes will be broadcast on the BBC’s iPlayer platform, with episodes one and two being broadcast live on BBC Scotland and BBC Three respectively. The premiere episode will be on BBC Scotland on Monday, 18th September, at 10:00-10:30 PM, with a second one on the following day between 9:00 and 9:30 PM.
Sean Skelly, Head of Men’s Basketball, who features heavily in the series, said: “The documentary is a fantastic showpiece for the club over an amazing 12 months. I think it’s fantastic for the fans to get a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes workings. I hope this gets us out to a new audience at an exciting time for us!”
