Following their Trophy Semi-Final Win in Essex on Monday, the Gladiators produced another strong and controlled performance on the road to claim an 63 – 84 victory over Nottingham Wildcats at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena this Saturday night.
The opening stages were competitive, but the Gladiators gradually began to assert themselves with disciplined defence and efficient offense. The Gladiators started the first quarter strong, gaining an early 8-point lead by the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcats weren’t going to let the Gladiators run away with it in the first half. The Wildcats would fight back to cut the lead to a single possession. The Gladiators took a slight edge into the half-time break, up 39 – 41.
Their physical presence around the basket proved decisive, as the Gladiators outscored Nottingham 40 – 28 in the paint and controlled the boards with a 44 – 32 rebounding advantage, limiting the Wildcats’ second-chance opportunities.
Despite Nottingham making a run in the second quarter, the Gladiators would remain calm and refocus in the third quarter of action. The Gladiators would keep pushing on both sides of the ball and slowly take a double-digit lead into the final quarter of action at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena. A strong fourth quarter would double the Gladiators lead and give the Gladiators another strong win the SLB Championship.
Annie Warren led the way with an impressive 24 points, while Tierra Hodges delivered another dominant all-round display with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Maura Fitzpatrick added 13 points, as the Gladiators’ balanced scoring and depth ensured they were able to close out the game comfortably.
The Caledonia Gladiators will return home next week for our Festive Double Header. The women will take on our rivals, the Newcastle Eagles, at 2pm followed by the men’s match-up against the London Lions at 5pm. Two Games, Double the Action! Don’t miss out.
