Caledonia Gladiators made a statement in their 2026/27 Super League Basketball Championship home opener, securing a convincing 86 – 57 victory over Essex Rebels at Playsport Arena on Sunday.
The Gladiators started strongly on home court, quickly finding their rhythm and building an early advantage. A balanced offensive performance and strong defensive effort helped Caledonia take control of the game, finishing the first quarter with a 25–17 lead.

MJ Johnson was at the heart of the Gladiators’ performance, delivering an outstanding all-around display. Johnson led the team with 22 points, alongside seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, earning herself the well-deserved MVP award.
Caledonia continued to build on their advantage in the second quarter, combining efficient shooting with relentless defensive pressure. The Gladiators held Essex to just 15 points in the period while adding 24 of their own to extend their lead to 49 32 at half-time.

The home side had their lowest scoring quarter after the break but with strong defence they were still able to outscore Essex 18–14. Strong contributions across the roster ensured the Gladiators remained firmly in control, with their defensive intensity limiting the Rebels’ opportunities to find a way back into the contest.
The fourth quarter saw Caledonia continue to push, adding another 19 points while holding Essex to 14. The Gladiators’ dominant performance was reflected in the final statistics, with Caledonia outrebounding the Rebels 52 – 46 and recording 19 steals compared to Essex’s 7. The home side also shared the ball effectively, finishing with 20 assists.

The game also featured a special family rivalry, as Gladiator Tia Freeman faced off against her brother, Tor Freeman, who leads the Essex Rebels as head coach. A unique storyline added another layer of interest to an already memorable home opener.
With a convincing 86–57 win, the Gladiators made it two home openers and two home victories for the club’s men’s and women’s teams, giving the new season a perfect start in front of the home crowd.
The women will return to Playsport Arena on Sunday, 18 October, to take on Newcastle Eagles in their next home fixture as they look to build on their impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign.
