Leicester Riders edged the short-handed Caledonia Gladiators 85–79 in a fierce contest at the Mattioli Arena, a game fought with real intensity from start to finish. Despite having a reduced rotation, the Gladiators came out swinging, matching Leicester’s physicality and trading blows early through sharp attacking play and committed defence.

A decisive second-quarter burst from Leicester opened up a gap, entering half time with a 6-point lead. With the game never out of reach, the Gladiators refused to fold. Jett Speelman led the charge with 21 points, battling through contact and keeping his side within reach. Matthew Ragsdale added 19, sparking a strong third-quarter rally that reignited belief, while Ria’n Holland chipped in 13, with Captain Fraser Malcolm adding another 12, as the Gladiators kept pushing back. Strong playmaking from guard Kyle Jimenez, helped keep the offence running, keeping the Gladiators close throughout the game.

Every time the Gladiators threatened to turn the tide, Leicester found a response. Their 15 offensive rebounds proved crucial, landing timely blows whenever the Gladiators built momentum. Though the visitors shot a more efficient 50% from the field, the Riders’ late composure and depth ultimately carried them through the final minutes.

Short-numbered but fearless, the Gladiators fought until the final horn, forcing Leicester to earn every point. They may have left with a narrow defeat, but they did not go quietly, showing once again that this Gladiator squad is built for battle.
The Gladiators will be back at Playsport to kick off their SLB Trophy Campaign on Sunday, 7th of December after the men’s international break.
