Caledonia Gladiators closed out their Championship schedule for January in style with an impressive 92 – 80 victory over Oaklands Wolves on the road, rounding off preparations ahead of their SLB Trophy defence in Birmingham next weekend.
The Gladiators set the tone early, taking control of the contest with a strong first half that saw them build a double-digit advantage through pace, physicality and disciplined execution at both ends of the floor. After leading 48 – 33 at the break, the visitors continued to apply pressure in the third quarter, but Oakland’s weren’t ready to give up at home without a fight.
Despite a spirited response from the Wolves in the second half, it wouldn’t be enough to close the 15-point deficit as the Gladiators remained composed, managing the clock well and converting consistently from the free-throw line to see out a deserved road win. The Gladiators finished with a clear edge in rebounds and assists, while also capitalising on turnovers and bench production to maintain control throughout.
Captain Tierra Hodges once again showcased her leadership and composure, contributing 27 points alongside key defensive efforts and playmaking in crucial moments, earning MVP honours. New signing Tess Amundsen continued to impress, adding 11 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assist off the bench, along with 15 points from Brynn Masikewich and 13 points from Mathilde Domenger, and providing valuable energy and physicality as the Gladiators’ depth came to the fore.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Gladiators now turn their attention to Birmingham, where they will look to defend their SLB Trophy against Sheffield Hatters on Sunday 1st February.
