Tough afternoon in Sheffield in the Super League Basketball for our Women’s team as they fall to Hatters 86-76 after a closely contested fight. After falling to a 9-point deficit, Gladiators fought back with three highly contested quarters, behind joint leading scorer, and your Gladiator of the day, Deylanie Byrne’s 22 points.
The first quarter started slow with an 11 – 0 run by the Hatters to start play. A slow shooting start hurt the team with a low 1 – 8 from three against an efficient Hatters team who shot 61% from the field.
During the second, both teams came out strong, trading back-to-back basket in through the first minute and a half of play. The pace of play slowed with a minute and half following with no score from either team, with tempers running high and Gladiator coach, Handy, receiving a technical foul early. Gladiators ended the quarter with a improved 100% shooting from three. Gladiators fought hard throughout the quarter to lose the 10-minute period by 2 points, 27 – 25.

After half-time, going into quarter three, Gladiators started strong with a 9 – 3 run in the first 3 minutes of action. The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the quarter, with Gladiators coming out on top with a one-point win in the quarter.
The final quarter continued to see even play between the two teams, with the score of the quarter ending tied at 15 – 15. Despite a strong three quarters, Gladiators were unable to over the deficit created early in the game and fell to Hatter 86 – 76.
The Gladiators will look to use the experience from this game to move forward through the season.
