Caledonia Gladiators Lukas Palyza and Yevheniia Putra have been named in the men’s and women’s British Basketball League all-star fives respectively, for this week. The two impressed massively in huge wins over Sheffield Sharks and Durham Palatinates as part of a double-header Sunday for the franchise.
In the first fixture of the day, Czech international, Lukas Palyza stood out as the game MVP as Gladiators defeated Sheffield Sharks 87-83 in a clutch overtime win. Palyza put up an impressive 23 points, two rebounds and an assist – leading the game in scoring over Devearl Ramsey, who had 20. The forward shot 6-13 from the field, and an impressive 8-8 from the free throw line in front of an excitable home crowd. He also maintained a positive impact on the game, finishing the game with a six +/-.
Following on from the Sharks’ win, Yevheniia Putra had an impressive Women’s British Basketball League debut in a huge 99-44 victory over Durham Palatinates. The Ukrainian junior international, who represented her country at the summer’s European Championships, scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out one assist – dominating the game on the inside. She managed the impressive stat line in only 22 minutes, as Miguel Ortega used depth to his advantage, giving all 12 players at least ten minutes of play. In an effective game shooting-wise, Putra shot 8-12 from the field, all from inside the arc – alongside 3-4 free throws. Defensively, the big also contributed well, with 5 steals of the team’s 13 in total, which led to 24 points from turnovers.
