This Sunday, both WBBL & BBL Gladiators take to the Emirates Arena to play host to Durham Palatinates and Surrey Scorchers respectively, in what’s set out to be an exciting afternoon of basketball.
Firstly, at 2PM, Miguel Ortega’s side, fresh off a historic win in London at the weekend, beating a Lions team previously undefeated in 52 games, welcome Durham Palatinates to town, who defeated them only a few weeks ago in the North East. They’ll certainly be looking to carry on their momentum from the weekend’s victory, and put defeats against Leicester and Durham behind them.
At the weekend, with the team having great all-round performances, Chantelle Handy, Erin McGarrachan and Abbie Wolf stood out in particular. The latter was recognised with a spot in the WBBL’s All-Star 5 this week thanks to her double-double against last season’s quadruple winners.
For Durham, Jessica Wayne is standing out in a season which they are struggling. Now, after 10 games, Palatinates sit 9th in the WBBL Championship table. Wayne is averaging 17.7 PPG, 8.9 RPG and 2.5 APG.
Later in the day, at 5PM, Darryl Wood steps in for Gareth Murray on Head Coach duties, as the Gladiators welcome former players, Boban Jacdonmi, Tayo Ogedengbe, and their Surrey Scorchers.
On Friday night in an impressive win over the Cheshire Phoenix, Jeremiah Bailey stood out, also receiving BBL All-Star 5 honours for his great performance. Aljami Durham, David Sloan, Prince Onwas and Fahro Alihodzic all stood out in the team’s performance – with all hitting double-digit points.
For the away side, South Sudan international Padiet Wang has stood out as an entertaining high-flyer. So far this season he is averaging 13 PPG, 5.3 RPG and 4.4 APG. Unfortunately for Surrey, they sit last in the league, having only one two games, with the last being an impressive New Year’s Day outing against Bristol Flyers.
