We are delighted to announce Alix McIntosh and Kerry McGhee as the first recipients of the Caledonia Gladiators Scholarship. This new initiative allows the players to be full members of our professional women’s team alongside undertaking their university studies.

Alix and Kerry were members of our High-Performance Programme last season and the work each of them put in saw them earn minutes in the professional league during the second half of the season. The High-Performance Programme allowed them to engage in daily individual and team practices along with strength and conditioning input and off court education aimed at allowing them to take the step towards being professional players.

Kerry, who moved to the Gladiators High-Performance Programme from Gladiators Basketball and was the starting point guard for the GB U20 team this summer, is beginning her degree in Forensic Chemistry, at the University of Strathclyde.

Shooting guard Alix, who came through the youth programme at Ayr Storm and has represented Great Britain at Youth EuroBasket tournaments over the last 3 summers, has just started studying Pharmacy, also at the University of Strathclyde.

The Caledonia Gladiators Scholarship Programme sees both players receive support from the Gladiators to train and play within the professional environment, alongside academic support from their university.

Coach Chantelle Handy said on the signings:

“Kerry’s improvement over the last two seasons has been excellent.

She took last year out of school to really prioritise her basketball and the results showed on the court.

Her recent inclusion in the GB under 20 squad over the Summer has added further experience to her basketball resume.

As a young Scottish talent we are very invested in her development and growth throughout her career.”

“As another young Scottish talent it is brilliant to have Alix included as a full part of our professional roster this season.

She had a few standout WBBL games last year and has shown she has the potential to compete at a high level.

Her experience at GB youth teams the past few years has further demonstrated this and we look forward to welcoming her back after European u18 competition in August.”

High-Performance Programme Lead Donnie MacDonald commented on the pair:

“Kerry and Alix put in countless hours and worked incredibly hard last year to improve their game and deservedly earned playing time with our pro team.

I’m absolutely delighted to see them both being the first to be receive this new scholarship, which we see as a fantastic development which will allow top players from our High-Performance Programme to stay in Scotland to study at our top-class educational institutions alongside playing for Caledonia Gladiators in domestic and European competition.

I’m really looking forward seeing them use this opportunity as another step towards becoming fully fledged professional players in the future.”
