In their last game before their historic Super League Basketball Trophy Final, the Gladiators played host to the Newcastle Eagles. In front of a loud Playsport audience, the Gladiators came back from behind to take the win in the SLB Championship game. After trailing for the first three quarters of the game, the Gladiators showed their fighting spirit to come back and take the win on home court.

The Eagles would take the early lead in the first quarter of action against the Gladiators, taking the first quarter 14 – 20. The quarter would see the Gladiators take an early lead in the first few minutes of action, being up 7 – 3 within two minutes of play. However, the Newcastle Eagles were not discouraged as they fought themselves quickly back into the game to tie the score 9 – 9 and then take the lead within the first five minutes. The two teams traded baskets for the quarter but ultimately the Eagles would take the 6-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the game continue to be close with the Gladiators taking the quarter by 1-point, cutting Newcastle’s lead to 5 entering half-time. Aided by their efficiency from behind the 3-point line, scoring 4 of 6 from behind the line, the Gladiators were able to move momentum in their favour entering the half-time break.

The half-time score was 33 – 38 to the Newcastle Eagles.

Another tight quarter after half-time saw the Gladiators continue to slowly reduce Newcastle’s first quarter lead, taking the third quarter 23 – 21 to bring the lead to just 3-points entering the final quarter of action at Playsport. Leading the charge was tonight’s MVP, Kat Tudor, who led the team in scoring with 23 points with 10 of those point coming in the third quarter alone.

The final quarter started with the Gladiators still down 3, but the Gladiators put on a show in the final 10 minutes to win the game by 8-points. The team put up 26 points in the final quarter to Newcastle’s 15 to take the win on home court in front of a loud Playsport Arena. Turning up the defensive pressure and putting on a masterclass under the basket helped the Gladiators come back and overcome the Eagles.
