Miguel Ortega’s Caledonia Gladiators are set to make history this week, becoming the first Scottish women’s team in 50 years (Central YMCA, 1973) to compete in European competition. Benfica will visit PlaySport, East Kilbride, on Wednesday at 7:30 PM, becoming the first European opponents to travel to the new facility. Gladiators will make their home debut in EuroCup Women, following the cancellation of their previous game vs Elitzur Ramla – due to be their first.

Following a busy off-season, Ortega’s side has a new look – with three players maintained from their second-place finish in the Women’s British Basketball League, and eight new names to the fans. Ariadna Pujol, who impressed in the pre-season, has previous experience in the competition – having played with Cadi La Seu in the 20/21 and 22/23 seasons.

For Benfica, American guard Keilanei Cooper, and Portuguese big Carolina Cruz have stood out in their first four domestic games in LFB. At this early point in the campaign, Wednesday’s opponents sit seventh in the table, having won two and lost two. The duo are averaging 12.7 and 14.3 PPG respectively. They made their EuroCup start against Basket Namur Capitale, with the Belgian side defeating them 60-52. It was once again Cruz who led the game for the Portuguese side with 12 points, despite the loss.

The night’s set to be an exciting one. With the game tipping off at 7:30 PM, the fanzone will open at 6 PM – allowing fans the chance to grab some food, drinks, and merch ahead of the main event. The mascots and dancers will be entertaining the crowd during breaks, with several performances throughout the break.
